1.  Basic Information

DBT (Dialectical Behaviour Therapy) is a groundbreaking treatment designed to help individuals regulate their emotions and behaviours. Initially developed in the 1980s and 1990s for individuals diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), it has since shown effectiveness with a wide range of mental health disorders, especially substance use disorders, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. It has also shown usefulness with individuals who do not have a diagnosed mental health disorder, but who struggle to regulate their emotions and behaviours. The pillar of the treatment is the central dialectic of acceptance and change. A dialectic refers to a pair of opposites being equally valid at the same time: radical acceptance and change simultaneously.

Willow Oak Psychology offers a 25-week Stand-Alone DBT Skills Group Program, which includes the following modules: Distress Tolerance (8 weeks), Emotion Regulation (9 weeks), and Interpersonal Effectiveness (8 weeks). Mindfulness skills are taught within each of these three modules. The groups are coordinated by Advanced DBT Clinician and clinical psychologist Dr Sarah Swannell.

Stand-Alone DBT Skills Groups differ from Comprehensive DBT Programs. In addition to weekly skills groups and a weekly consultation group for clinicians, Comprehensive DBT Programs also offer weekly individual therapy and between-session phone coaching.

Stand-Alone DBT Skills Groups are appropriate for individuals who are: 1) committed to, and motivated for, treatment; 2) are not currently engaging in high risk and/or life-threatening behaviours; 3) and do not require between session support. Individuals who do not meet these criteria may require more intensive and individual support outside of the scope of these skills groups and may wish to access a Comprehensive DBT Program that also includes weekly individual therapy and between-session phone coaching.

If you are interested in accessing a Comprehensive DBT Program, we recommend DBTBrisbane and The Glow Centre.
